AYR Aviation Ltd to deliver aid in Haiti

Monday 22nd September 2008

AYR Aviation Ltd is proud to have been selected to participate in the UN World Food Programme's post-hurricane disaster relief operation in Haiti.

Two of our helicopters and their crews are in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, preparing to fly.

Haiti is suffering from extreme flooding and storm damage as a result of four tropical storms - Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike - in recent weeks. The western city of Gonaives has been particularly badly affected with practically every home sustaining some damage and many containing two to three feet of water. Many people are homeless and living in shelters and schools. The WFP estimates that in Gonaives alone 800,000 people are in desperate need of help.

Haiti's agriculture has been wiped out by the storms, contributing to the current severe food shortage. In addition the road system has been ruined and several of the mountainous country's key bridges have been rendered unusable, making air transport the best means of delivering food aid to those in need.
