Flying for the UN World Food Programme in Nepal
Monday 22nd September 2008
AYR Aviation Ltd is currently taking part in the World Food Programme's disaster relief operation following catastrophic flooding in the Surkhet region of Nepal.
Two MI-8 MTV helicopters and ten crew have been deployed to assist in providing food aid to an estimated 70,000 people affected by the floods. Flood waters are receding but as of mid-September water levels were still as high as two and a half metres in some areas.
AYR Aviation Ltd is currently transporting an average of six tonnes of food per day to the displaced and cut-off people of the area. The MI-8 MTV has been chosen for the operation in this difficult mountainous region as it can reach higher altitudes carrying heavy loads.
